Finding the right attorney after a serious accident — where do you even start?

I have never dealt with personal injury cases before and honestly have no idea where to begin. What should I check first when looking for an attorney who actually handles serious accident cases and not just minor stuff?

Had a similar situation after a pedestrian accident and spent way too long looking in the wrong places. The issue is that most people search for "lawyer" in general and end up with someone who handles everything from parking tickets to divorces. For serious injury cases that approach rarely works well. What actually made sense to me was looking for referral services that pre-select attorneys based on the type and severity of the case. I found some useful information through this link that helped me understand how case matching works and what categories of injury claims are typically handled separately. Things like construction accidents, commercial vehicle cases, or medical malpractice usually require someone with very specific experience. The clearest sign a service is worth paying attention to is when they explain what types of cases they take, how the process works, and whether there are any costs upfront. If none of that is stated clearly it is usually better to keep looking.
