Health Careers Pathway Programs

Health Career & Education

Pennsylvania AHEC strives to meet the health care workforce needs of Pennsylvanians by offering an array of health career pathway programs, particularly for students with diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds.

SEARCH Academy

An online health career exploration program for high school students featuring live panel discussions with health professionals and career-based skills sessions. More than 160 students participated from January to May 2021, with many exploring multiple health careers.

Summer Health Career Camps

Southwest PA AHEC Summer Health Career Academy

Southwest PA AHEC Summer Health Career Academy: Competitive weeklong camp for 9th and 10th graders in southwest Pennsylvania. Includes hands-on activities, leadership training, opportunities to meet health professionals. 

Camp Exploration

Pathway to Healthcare and Social Service Careers: Day camp for 8th-12th graders in Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, Jefferson, McKean, and Potter counties. Do hands-on medical procedures, measure vital signs, and learn basic medical terminology and leadership skills. Coordinated by Workforce Solutions for North Central PA in collaboration with Northwest PA AHEC. 

Southcentral PA AHEC Health Careers Awareness Camp

Competitive weeklong camp for high school students from southcentral Pennsylvania interested in a health care career. Features job shadowing, simulation lab time, health career exploration workshops.

Taking the SAT/ACT, MCAT, GRE, or DAT? Take advantage of discounted prep courses through Pennsylvania AHEC and The Princeton Review.® Courses include content area instruction, thousands of practice questions, and up to one year of unlimited 24/7 access.

SAT/ACT Self-Paced Course: $60 per person

GRE Self-Paced Course: $300 per person

Community Action Poverty Simulation

Moves participants to think about the harsh realities of poverty and to talk about how individuals and communities can make a difference. Contact your regional Pennsylvania AHEC office to set up a simulation for your class or club.

Loan Repayment & Scholarship Programs

National Health Service Corps

National loan repayment and scholarship programs available for selected health professions students intending to work in rural or underserved communities. 

Pennsylvania Primary Care Loan Repayment Program​

State loan repayment program for physicians, dentists, CRNPs, certified nurse midwives, dental hygienists, physician assistants, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, and psychologists.

Scholars Program

A two-year interprofessional experiential learning program for health professions students focused on rural and underserved health care and vulnerable populations. 

Primary Care Ambassador Program

Supports qualifying undergraduate students in their pursuit of becoming

a primary care physician for underserved communities.

Accredited Community Health Worker Training and Continuing Education

A training program accredited by the Pennsylvania Certification Board designed to provide the core competencies needed for work in community-based and inpatient settings. Community health workers serve as a liaison between communities and health care organizations, provide guidance and social assistance to community residents, advocate for individuals and community health, provide referrals and coordinate needed follow-up services, and so much more. 

A new initiative of Pennsylvania AHEC to build capacity for addressing health disparities and promoting health equity.

On-Demand Opioid Intervention Training

Learn the signs and symptoms of opioid use disorder, identify medications used for treatment and to reverse overdose, recognize myths and realities of Medication Assisted Treatment, overcome stigma and how to talk to individuals on the road to recovery, and identify resources to assist with recovery. Developed in collaboration with the National Center for Integrated Behavioral Health and the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy.

Every Smoker, Every Time

A free online training program providing information on effective brief intervention for tobacco users, nicotine replacement therapy, and referral options for primary care and behavioral health teams, pharmacists, dentists, dental hygienists, social workers, counselors, and others.

 

Developed for the Pennsylvania Department of Health by the Eastcentral PA AHEC.

Diabetes Prevention Program

Nationally recognized lifestyle management program for individuals at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Available in Northeast Pennsylvania for free from the NE PA AHEC. Email info@ecneahec.org to register for the next class.

A group quit program offered by Northcentral and Northeast PA AHECs in collaboration with the American Lung Association in Northeast Pennsylvania. Email info@ecneahed.org for additional information.

Adult or Youth Mental Health First Aid

A skills-based course that teaches you to how identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental distress and substance use disorders. Group courses available statewide. Contact your regional Pennsylvania AHEC office to set up a Mental Health First Aid course for your organization.
